Prime MinisterNarendra Modion Friday congratulatedTarique Rahmanon leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to a decisive victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, signaling New Delhi’s readiness to engage with the new political leadership in Bangladesh. In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi emphasised India’s commitment to democracy and regional stability and said the mandate reflected the people’s trust in Rahman’s leadership. He also reaffirmed that India would continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh while working together to deepen bilateral ties and advance shared development goals.

"I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals," said PM Modi.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday declared victory as the results and leads showed that it had secured a comfortable majority in the parliamentary elections. In a post on social media platform X, BNP declared that the party is all set to form the next government in Bangladesh. Multiple media tallies in Bangladesh showed the BNP had won more than 150-175 seats in the 300-seat parliament. The Election Commission (EC) is yet to make a formal announcement.

The election was seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami, in the absence of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina's now disbanded Awami League.

The BNP had earlier announced that if it wins the election, then its chairman and former premier Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman would be the next prime minister of Bangladesh.
