India's heatwave intensified on Sunday, with Akola in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region recording the country's highest maximum temperature of 46.9°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that scorching conditions will continue over parts of Northwest and Central India for the next three days.

Vidarbha bore the brunt of the heat, with heatwave conditions reported at a few places across the region. Isolated pockets of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh also recorded heatwave conditions on the day.

Temperature Departures: State-Wise

Markedly Above Normal (more than 5.1°C above normal)

Himachal Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh recorded temperatures markedly above normal at a few places. Isolated locations in East and West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Saurashtra and Kutch also fell in this category.

Appreciably Above Normal (3.1°C to 5°C above normal)

Large parts of Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, West Rajasthan and Gujarat recorded temperatures appreciably above normal. Most of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi fell in this bracket as well, along with a few places in Vidarbha and isolated locations across Odisha, Bihar, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

Above Normal (1.6°C to 3°C above normal)

South Interior Karnataka recorded above-normal temperatures at many places. A few locations in Arunachal Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep, as well as isolated spots in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka, also fell in this range.

Parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, along with isolated locations in Assam, Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, remained close to their seasonal averages.
