Days before the second phase of thevotingin West Bengal, a Congress leader in Asansol was allegedly beaten to death in the early hours of Saturday. The incident, captured on CCTV, has triggered protests and sharp accusations ahead of the ongoing political climate in the region, with the Congress party blaming local rivals for the violence. Debdeep Chatterjee was allegedly assaulted by a group of individuals between 1.00 am and 2.00 am at Ananya Complex in Asansol.

The attack was caught on CCTV cameras and later resulted in his death. Police said the victim was targeted by multiple attackers, though the exact motive behind the assault is still under investigation. The incident has raised concerns about rising political violence in the region.

The Asansol South police station has arrested three persons in connection with the murder. The arrests were made on Saturday after what officials described as a sustained investigation. DCP Dhruv Das confirmed that action has been taken in the case and arrests have been made following a detailed probe.

According to police sources, the accused are currently being interrogated to ascertain the motive and circumstances leading to the killing. Efforts are ongoing to determine whether the crime was politically motivated or driven by other factors.
