A clash erupted between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Howrah on Sunday. Police had to carry out a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. The clash comes amid rising political tension after the murder of a Congress leader in Asansol.
A man named Debdeep Chatterjee was allegedly attacked by a group of people at Ananya Complex between 1:00 am and 2:00 am. CCTV footage captured the assault, and he later died due to injuries.
Following the incident, Congress leaders staged a protest outside the Asansol South Police Outpost. Prosenjit Puitundi led a gherao and demanded action. The Congress party has accused a local TMC representative of being involved in the murder, calling it political violence linked to elections.
Police said three persons have been arrested in connection with the murder. The arrests were made by the Asansol South police station, and further investigation is ongoing.
The situation had already turned tense a day earlier in Bhabanipur, a key constituency represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee since 2011. Supporters of both BJP and TMC clashed during public meetings held by senior leaders.
The situation worsened after Banerjee stopped her speech midway, alleging disturbance caused by loudspeakers from a nearby BJP rally. She later apologised to her supporters before leaving the venue.
The Rapid Action Force (RAF) and local police were deployed to control the situation. They formed a human chain to separate the two groups and prevent further violence. Officials later said the situation was brought under control and normalcy was restored.
