California first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsomdelved into her childhood and revealed the tragic story behind her beloved pet chicken in a gushing, softball interview with Marie Claire.

The piece titled, “Is Jennifer Siebel Newsom the Most Underestimated Woman in American Politics?” covered Newsom’s struggles as a filmmaker and her marriage to Gov. Gavin Newsom ahead of his anticipated run for president in 2028.

But it also touched on tragedy that struck Newsom as a young girl — and inspired the name behind her current chicken.

Newsom was about to turn seven when her sister, Stacey, died in a golf cart accident during a family trip to Hawaii.

“I think my mom and dad were in so much pain,” shetold the magazine, “and they couldn’t be there for me.”

To help her deal with the grief and pain of losing a sister, her parents got her a special gift, a white pony named Sugar and a trainer who she said taught her to jump hay bales and to “be fearless.”

In honor of that childhood pony that got her through tough times, Newsom named her fluffy white chicken Sugar, too.
