A man armed with guns and knives stormed the lobby outside a high-profile journalists' dinner attended by US PresidentDonald Trumpand several senior US leaders on Saturday night. He rushed toward the ballroom before Secret Service agents quickly swarmed him and took him into custody. Trump was uninjured and was swiftly escorted away.
In a video shared by CBS News, guests were seen diving under tables as the chaos unfolded. Audible gasps echoed through the room as attendees realised something was wrong. Journalists were seen reaching for their phones to relay information.
“Out of the way, sir!” someone shouted, while others yelled for people to duck.
Some reported hearing gunshots outside the vast subterranean ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where the event was being held.
From one corner, a chant of “God Bless America” began as the president was escorted off stage. Trump briefly stumbled, apparently tripping, before being helped up by Secret Service agents.
Outside the hotel, National Guard personnel and other law enforcement agencies flooded the area, while helicopters circled overhead.
Sharing her experience, ANI reporter Reena Bhardwaj, who was present at the Washington event, said, "Suddenly, we heard a noise which sounded like dishes clattering. As soon as I turned to look at it, I could see servers rushing inside with their trays. I felt something was wrong and that a security lapse had occurred. Everyone started taking cover under the tables and lying on the ground. This went on for 5-10 minutes."
