US President Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday evening after gunfire was heard inside the Washington Hilton hotel. Officials said a suspected shooter was in custody. The President was not injured.

Witnesses said that after shots were heard, Trump was quickly escorted away from the dais inside the ballroom as security personnel moved him to safety. Guests inside the room reportedly took cover under tables during the incident. A number of senior US officials were present at the event, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

"We were sitting here, and we just heard a loud 'pop, pop, pop.' Everybody just went under the table, and we didn’t know what was happening," NewsNation White House correspondent Kellie Meyer said by cell phone shortly after the disturbance.

In the Washington Hilton ballroom, Deadline's Ted Johnson said: "I heard what sounded like four shots, and it seemed to come from the hall just outside the ballroom near my table." Education Secretary Linda McMahon's security told CNN that there was a shooter in the lobby and he is dead. The White House Pool Report from Jeff Mordock of the Washington Times has said that they "just heard Secret Service say alleged shooter is in custody."

CNN's Wolf Blitzer said he was outside the main ballroom at the time of the incident and heard shots fired. "I start hearing gunshots in the hall right near me, and the next thing I knew, a police officer threw me to the ground and was on top of me," Blitzer said. "And then they grabbed me, the police officers, and they take me back into the men’s room, where it was safe, and there were about 15 other men who are stuck in there, and they won’t let them out, and that’s what happened.”

Security personnel were seen moving swiftly to secure the area as a precaution. It is not immediately known what triggered the response.

Officials are expected to provide further updates as the situation develops.
