Most Americans still say the US should put more emphasis on solar and wind energy, but support for both has declined, while backing for nuclear power has risen to its highest level, according to anew Gallup poll.

Sixty-six percent (66%) say they want more emphasis on solar energy, while 55% say the same for wind. Both figures are down compared to recent years, marking the lowest support for these sources in more than a decade.

At the same time, support for nuclear energy has increased to 46%, the highest level Gallup has recorded. Support for fossil fuels remains lower by comparison, with 42% favoring more emphasis on natural gas, 34% on oil, and just 23% on coal.

Views differ sharply by political affiliation. Large majorities of Democrats say they favor more emphasis on solar and wind, while Republicans are more likely to support increased use of natural gas, oil and nuclear power. Differences are smaller when it comes to nuclear energy.

Despite growing support for nuclear energy overall, most Americans say they oppose building a nuclear power plant in their local area. Fifty-three percent (53%) say they would oppose such construction, while 45% say they would favor it.

The findings are based on Gallup’s March 2–18, 2026 Environment poll.
