Losing social media followers is mostly not a concern for political leaders, nor is it something that gains a nation’s interest; however, for young leaders likeRaghav Chadha- who seemingly had a strong hold among young voters and youth in India, the case seems to be a bit different. It is not the first time that an opposition leader joined the ruling BJP- but it surely is a first for that same leader to make headlines over hisInstagramhandle and followers. Reportedly, Chadha ended up losing a million Instagram followers in under 24 hours after switching from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the rival Bharatiya Janata Party.
The former AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP was already in the news for being removed as AAP's deputy leader of the Rajya Sabha. Amid the same, the sudden announcement of his joining the BJP turned into a further louder talking point across the country. From backlash on social media to people resharing his previous comments on BJP– you name and the netizens had all kinds of reactions to give. Amid the same, the one particular reaction that grabbed the most eyeballs was his reported decline from 14.6 million to 13.4 million Instagram followers.
Many were quick to connect it to the “unfollow” trend, while others credited Gen Z for such a strong show of change in support.
The switch was announced on Friday, April 24. He formalised the split while addressing a presser, along with announcing that two-thirds of the party's Rajya Sabha members would merge with the BJP. He reportedly exited the party along with Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Vikram Sahney and Rajinder Gupta.
“Instagram followers won't give him a single benefit in ground politics,” a user said. “Unfollow Campaign against Raghav Chadha is going on in Full Mode. GenZ will show him his place ....very very soon,” added another.

“Considering how National media keeps an eye on reels, views and followers to flex the muscle, this surely won't get coverage since it's swinging the other way,” commented the next person in the comments.
