France’s President Emmanuel Macron called upon the Europeans to step up and defend their own interests, saying that the US, China and Russia are now all "dead against" them. He called it a "wake-up" time for the Europeans. Macron also said that the United States cannot be a dependable ally.
"We should not underestimate that this is a unique moment where a U.S. president, a Russian president, a Chinese president are dead against the Europeans. So, this is the right moment for us to wake up," Macron said in a discussion with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, organised by the Kathimerini newspaper in Athens.
"We have to be a little bit self-confident and deliver an agenda," he added.
"When the Ukraine war started in February 2022, a lot of people were skeptical about our capacity to react. But matter of fact, what happened? Day one — day one we took sanctions on Russia, unanimity. We are taking the 20th package and the Russian economy is suffering from that. Don’t believe the fake news — they are suffering," the French President said.
On the US, Macron said, "Everybody sees that the number one power, the US, could be an ally for certain countries, but this ally is not so much certain and nobody is totally sure if this ally is reliable."
Macron said that Washington follows an "America First" policy. The US' second priority is China. "We have to be lucid on the US strategy… This is not just Trump’s character or behaviour. The United States, I would say, for now 15 years, decided the number one issue is America — America first. The second priority is China… Their strategies just don’t put European interests at the center," he said.
