Delhi is reeling under asevere heatwaveas soaring temperatures and hot winds push the city into a “loo” spell, with the mercury crossing 43°C in several areas. The capital has recorded its first major heatwave day of the season, making daytime conditions harsh anduncomfortable for residents. However, weather experts predict that relief may be on the way with rain and strong winds expected in the coming days.

The city witnessed intense summer conditions on Friday as most weather stations recorded temperatures above 40°C. The Ridge weather station recorded the highest temperature at 43.1°C, marking the peak of the ongoing heatwave. At Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s standard weather station, the maximum temperature stood at 41.9°C, which is 4.2°C above normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 24.5°C.

“The air from desert regions is increasing the temperature significantly,” meteorological experts, as per a report by HT, noted, pointing to hot winds coming from the Thar desert and parts of Balochistan.

Experts explained that a combination of clear skies, dry air and strong winds has created ideal conditions for heatwave formation. “The dry weather and strong sunlight are driving the heatwave conditions in the capital,” said Skymet weather scientist Mahesh Palawat.

The heat has also impacted daily life, with people avoiding outdoor movement during peak afternoon hours. Wind speeds of 10 to 20 km per hour provided little relief as hot gusts continued to dominate the weather pattern.

“After Sunday, Delhi may see a shift in weather patterns,” officials said, as per HT. A western disturbance is also likely to bring thunderstorm activity and light rain early next week, which could help bring temperatures down and ease heatwave conditions.

Along with rising temperatures, Delhi’s air quality also deteriorated, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 226, placing it in the poor category. Several areas even crossed 300 AQI, falling in the very poor range, adding another layer of discomfort for residents.
