A 23-year-old lawyer from Kanpur died by suicide on Thursday after jumping from the fifth floor of the Kanpur court building. Before taking the step, he posted his two-page suicide note on his WhatsApp status. In the note, Priyanshu Shrivastava blamed his father for years of mental and physical torture since childhood and urged people to read his message fully, calling it his last wish.

In the start of his letter, he wrote about an incident when he was just six years old, saying he was punished harshly for taking juice from the fridge without permission. “I was just six when I took mango juice from the refrigerator without asking anybody. For this, I was stripped and sent out of the house. I understand parents must be strict with their children, but not to the point where they feel suffocated. I tried a lot to move on and live my life, but I don’t think it is worth it,” he wrote.

The victim also mentioned that he was forced to take certain academic decisions. He said he was made to choose computer science in Class 9 and was threatened in Class 10 that he would be punished again if he scored low marks.

He further said that he was constantly questioned over small matters, which he described as mental torture.

“I don’t think I can live with this anymore,” wrote Priyanshu.

In the note, he made an appeal to parents, asking them not to put excessive pressure on their children. “I want to appeal to all parents: torture your children to the point they can take it. Don’t let my father touch my body. I do not want any action to be taken against him so that my family is not affected. I wish no one gets a father like this. I lost, Papa won. Congratulations to him,” he wrote in the 2 page long suicide note. Police have taken note of the incident and are looking into the matter.
