An ultra-wealthy big game hunter received a cruel twist of fate while going after a wanted prey in Africa.
The Daily Mailreportedon Friday that 75-year-old multi-millionaire Californian vineyard owner Ernie Dosio was hunting alongside a professional hunter in the Lope-Okanda forest of Gabon last week to try to get a shot at ashyand elusive antelope called the yellow-backed duiker when he met a brutal fate.
As Dosio and the other hunter went deeper into the rainforest to find the duiker, they unexpectedly stumbled into five female elephants with a calf.
The startled and angry animals promptly charged after Dosio and his professional hunter.
The professional hunter was violently thrown aside and lost his gun in the bushes. He suffered serious injuries but survived.
Dosio, however, was trampled to death by the elephants.
The Mailnotesthat the elephants were so well hidden in the undergrowth that they seemingly appeared out of nowhere.
A retired game hunter in Cape Town who knew Dosio told theDaily Mailthat the now-deceased man’s hunts were all about conservation.
He added that Dosio also booked a hunt for dwarf forest buffalo and was barred from carrying his own guns by “strict” licensing laws.
“Ernie has been hunting since he could hold a rifle and has many trophies from Africa and the U.S.,” The hunter told the Mail. “Although many disagree with big-game hunting, all Ernie’s hunts were strictly licensed and above board and were registered as conservation in culling animal numbers.”
