On Saturday, April 17, the stage at Manhasset’s Shelter Rock Elementary School was brimming with song and spirit as first grade students presented a captivating performance of the “3 Piggy Opera.” Performing for an audience of proud parents and family members, the students showcased not only their growing creativity but also a remarkable sense of confidence and teamwork.

The production was far more than a simple stage play; it served as a vibrant extension of the first grade curriculum. By merging the classic tale with musical theater, the program reinforced core literacy and storytelling skills. Through the lens of “arts integration,” students explored narrative structure and character development in a way that resonated far beyond the traditional classroom setting.

The success of the “3 Piggy Opera” was the result of a dedicated multi-disciplinary effort. Under the guidance of the first grade teaching team, students mastered their roles and deepened their understanding of the story. The production was further elevated by the expertise of music teacher Kasey Faltings, who guided the students through the vocal performances and rhythmic sequences, and art teacher Kimberly Pleines, who worked with the children to create the visual elements that brought the “Three Little Pigs” world to life.

The performance concluded as a heartwarming celebration of student achievement. By stepping into their roles – whether as the wolf, pigs, peddlers or narrators – the children demonstrated the power of the arts to build community and foster a lifelong love of learning.
