About 150 middle school students from across Long Island participated in theNorth Shore Invitation Math Tournamenton Friday, March 27, including 50 students fromNorth Shore Middle School. The remaining competitors came from Cold Spring Harbor, Half Hollow Hills, Herricks, Hewlett-Woodmere, Long Island Homeschool, Bay Shore, South Huntington, Port Washington and Manhasset.
K–12 Mathematics Director Kimberly Mattes said students competed in four rounds: a STEM challenge, an individual round, a team round and a mixed team round, in which students were grouped with peers from other districts. Awards were presented for each round’s winners.
West Side School from Cold Spring Harbor won the STEM challenge. Overall team winners were Herricks Middle School in first place, Manhasset Middle School in second and West Hollow Middle School in third.
The competition was emceed by Mu Alpha Theta high school students Sofia Conway and Eva Dominguez. Other student volunteers included Zaina Ahmad, Luna Espinosa De Rozas, Brynn Paulinski and Sylvia Gao.
Organizers included middle school math teacher Kristin Frayler and K–12 Mathematics Director Kimberly Mattes.
