Prediction market startup Polymarket has opened a temporary “free grocery store” in Manhattan’s West Village, drawing long lines as shoppers waited for a chance to take home groceries at no cost. The pop-up, dubbed “The Polymarket,” opened on February 12 at 2 PM at 7th Avenue and Charles Street. The store is scheduled to operate daily at noon through February 15 (with some listings saying through February 16), opening for a few hours each day or while supplies last. The company delayed its opening by two hours on the first day as employees worked to stock shelves and prepare the space.

Outside, crowds wrapped around the block as dozens of New Yorkers braved the cold to participate. Some shoppers described the event as necessary amid inflation, while others said it should remain a temporary initiative.

Polymarket described the event as a “love letter to New York City.” The company’s billionaire founder, Shayne Coplan, grew up in New York, and its offices are based in the city. Four years ago, Polymarket shut down to American customers after a clash with regulators and is now in the process of reopening in the US.

The grocery pop-up is part of a broader promotional push as Polymarket competes with rival Kalshi Inc., which recently ran a one-day promotion offering $50 in free groceries at a Manhattan supermarket.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded with a satirical social media post following the announcement. Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Letitia James issued a consumer alert on February 2 warning that prediction markets do not have the same consumer protections as regulated platforms.

Polymarket said the pop-up will also offer free flowers and Valentine’s Day cards on Saturday, and on Monday is asking visitors to bring food to donate to the community. A sign outside reads: “Come early, shop with care, and take what you need. Once we’re out, we’re out!”
