A prominent department store that has been serving the public for almost two centuries is teetering on the edge of collapse following a series of financial woes and damaging headlines, raising fears the beloved retailer could close its doors permanently.

David Jones, which has long served as the ultimate luxury destination forshoppersacross Australia, has recorded substantial financial losses while facing mounting pressure from its onlineretailcompetitors.

The upmarketdepartment storefailed to file its most recent financial accounts, yet revealed a staggering £39.1 million (AUD$74 million) loss for the 2024 financial year.

Despite being a cornerstone of Australia's retail landscape for 188 years — predating Australia itself as a federated nation, which occurred only 125 years ago — it appears that 'DJ's', as it is fondly known, is heading towards an uncertain future.

Retail expert Barry Urquhart cautioned 7News that the situation is approaching a critical tipping point, warning that the business is "very much on the precipice".

"Closure and disposal are very real possibilities," he said, as anxiety mounts over the fate of the once-dominant brand.

Mr Urquhart attributed shifting consumer habits, driven by the escalatingcost of living, as a significant factor behind the department store's deterioration.

Shoppers reining in their spending amid thecost of livingcrisis have been identified as a key cause of the retailer's sharp decline, with customers increasingly abandoning department stores in favour of more affordable online alternatives. "Consumers have moved from being smart shoppers to extreme discount shoppers," Mr Urquhart added.
