In a setback for Pawan Khera, the Gauhati High Court on Friday rejected the Congress leader's plea for anticipatory bail in the case recently registered against him by the Crime Branch of Assam Police in Guwahati. This comes after Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia reserved the decision on Khera's bail plea on April 21.

A criminal case has been filed againt Khera alleging defamation, forgery and criminal conspiracy following his recent claims that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan holds multiple foreign passports and undisclosed assets abroad.

Earlier the Supreme Court had refused to grant him protection from arrest and declined to extend his transit anticipatory bail.

The top court directed Khera to approach the Gauhati High Court "today itself" for relief, making it clear that it would not continue interim protection after the expiry of the bail granted earlier by the Telangana High Court.
