The Democrats' House Foreign Affairs Committee has slammed US PresidentDonald Trumpfor sharing and amplifying a racist post on social media at a time when theUnited Statesis at war with Iran. The committee has lambasted Trump for treating the presidency like a "reality TV gig". Taking to X, the House Committee said, "The US is at war with Iran. Thirteen service members are dead, and the president has placed tens of thousands of Americans in harm’s way. Americans are struggling, and he’s busy amplifying racist trash on social media, treating the presidency like a reality TV gig. This is a serious moment. Our country deserves leadership that acts like it."
The US President is under fire from the House Committee of Democrats after he amplified a critique of birthright citizenship in the US by sharing a video featuring right-wing conservative author and radio host Michael Savage on Truth Social. In the clip, Savage criticised existing immigration laws, alleging that they allow individuals to exploit legal provisions by traveling to the US late in pregnancy to secure citizenship for their children.
The transcript that was shared by Donald Trump referred to Indians in derogatory terms over immigration.
In the video, Savage claimed that such practices create a loophole whereby "a baby here becomes an instant citizen", followed by family migration from countries including "China or India or some other hellhole on the planet".
The footage, originally aired on the Newsmax series The Savage Nation, was highlighted by the "Commentary Donald J Trump Posts From Truth Social" account, which serves as a platform dedicated to reposting the President's social media activity.
In the clip, Savage expressed deep frustration with the judicial process. "Today's brief, abbreviated discussion will be about the arguments that I just listened to before the Supreme Court about birthright citizenship. I was somewhat incensed by listening to the arguments because all I heard was legalese being bandied back and forth."
On Thursday, Trump sharing of anti-India posts drew a sharp response from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) that termed US President's action as "uninformed" and "inappropriate". The transcript of the Savage's show had mentioned India and some other nations as "hell-hole".
After the harm that was already done by Trump, the US embassy rushed into damage control and put out a message that Trump believes India is a "great" country led by a "good friend of mine".
Reacting to US embassy's statement, MEA said, "We have seen the comments, as also the subsequent statement issued by the US embassy in response."
"The remarks are obviously uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste. They certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which has long been based on mutual respect and shared interests," said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
