A 19-year-old man accused of a brutalrape and murder in south Delhiallegedly carried out another sexual assault just hours earlier in Rajasthan, exposing a chilling sequence of crimes that police say took place within a single night. The accused, Rahul Meena, wasarrested on Wednesday(April 22) in connection with the killing of a 22-year-old woman in Delhi’s Kailash Hills area. He was produced before the court on Thursday, and according to a report by PTI, he is showing little signs of contrition and has changed his statement repeatedly, officials privy to his interrogation said.

Though in court he said, "Mujhse apradh ho gaya... Galti ho gayi (I committed a crime, a mistake)," before a magistrate granted police custody for further interrogation, a report by PTI said.

Investigators said Meena then travelled to Delhi and entered the home of a former employer using a spare key. He had worked there for eight months before being dismissed. Knowing the family’s routine, he allegedly went straight to the rooftop study where the 22-year-old daughter was present.

Police said Meena attacked the woman, strangled her with a charging cable and struck her with a heavy object. “The investigation suggests that the accused raped the victim while she was still unconscious. He then dragged her down the stairs to another room where a locker was kept, and attempted toopen the biometric lock using her fingerprint, but it did not open,” a police official said.

He later broke open the locker, stole valuables and fled. CCTV footage shows he was inside the house for around 30 minutes.

Post-mortem findings confirmed multiple injuries and death due to strangulation. “The findings show death due to strangulation following assault. The preserved swabs and nail scrapings have been sent for further analysis to ascertain whether rape took place,” said Dr Sudhir Gupta.

Police are now reconstructing the sequence of events across Rajasthan and Delhi as the investigation continues.
