BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A 17-year-old is dead, and five others are injured following a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday afternoon, sources confirmed.

The shooting happened around 1:22 p.m.

Chief TJ Morse said two groups of people got into an argument inside the food court and started shooting at each other. He said it is not a random act of violence.

“Unfortunately, there were some innocent people who were in the area that might have also caught some rounds,” Morse said.

The victims include three seniors from Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, according to the Lafayette Consolidated Government.

Five people are in custody, Morse confirmed.

Sheriff Jason Ard with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed they have a person of interest in custody who is possibly tied to the shooting. Ard said there is a large LPSO presence in Watson.

EMS confirmed six victims have been taken to the hospital, one of whom died from their injuries. Police said some victims are undergoing surgery.

Officials said other people were hurt, but not from gunfire.

Morse said there is no threat to the public at this time.
