The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday (April 23) arrested a reader in the court of an additional sessions judge posted at Delhi's Tis Hazari Court in an alleged bribery case, the officials said. The accused allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a lawyer for "facilitating the allowance of the bail application of her client".

The accused, identified as Sanjeev Sadana, was working as a Reader to the Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ-02) at the Tis Hazari Courts.

"The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested the accused Reader to ASJ-02, Tis Hazari Courts, Delhi, while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant in a bribery case," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement, according to a PTI report.

The case was registered following a complaint in which it was alleged that the accused had demanded illegal gratification in exchange for facilitating the favourable consideration of a bail application filed on behalf of the complainant’s client.

A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway to ascertain whether other individuals were involved.

The CBI stated that they laid a trap after receiving a complaint and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 20,000 as part of the payment out of the total bribe of Rs 30,000.

Officials said the accused had initially demanded Rs 30,000 but agreed to accept Rs 20,000 as the first instalment. He was arrested on the spot while accepting the amount.

In another case, the CBI on Wednesday said it arrested a head constable of the Delhi Police’s Anti-Narcotics Cell for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh. The accused, identified as Ajay, was posted in the Dwarka unit and had allegedly demanded the money to avoid falsely implicating a woman in a criminal case. He, too, was caught after a trap was laid.

The back-to-back actions indicate the CBI’s continued focus on tackling corruption within public institutions. The agency reiterated that it remains committed to taking strict action against officials indulging in corrupt practices and urged citizens to report instances of bribery or coercion by public servants.

The CBI has consistently emphasised that timely complaints and cooperation from the public play a crucial role in ensuring accountability and securing convictions in corruption-related cases.
