As temperatures and humidity surge across Indian cities, hospitals are reporting a worrying rise in heatstroke cases, with people collapsing in public places, homes, and workplaces. Doctors warn that the first few minutes after a heat-related collapse are critical, often determining whether a person survives and how well they recover.
Heatstroke is the most severe form of heat-related illness, occurring when the body’s temperature regulation fails. Core body temperature can rise rapidly above 40°C, leading to brain damage, organ failure, and even cardiac arrest if not treated immediately. High humidity makes it worse by preventing sweat from evaporating, reducing the body’s natural cooling mechanism.
“When someone collapses in the heat, immediate action is critical. The first step is to move the person to a shaded or cooler environment and lay them flat. Elevating the legs slightly can help improve blood circulation. Tight or restrictive clothing should be loosened, and active cooling must begin right away - this can include sprinkling water on the body, applying wet cloths, or fanning to bring down the body temperature,” explains Dr. Purusatyam Chakraborty, Consultant - Head Emergency and Triage, CK Birla Hospitals.

If someone suddenly collapses due to extreme heat, quick and calm action can save a life:
Shift the person to a shaded or air-conditioned area immediately.
Lay them flat and slightly elevate the legs to improve blood circulation.
Remove tight or heavy clothing to help the body cool faster.
Use water, wet cloths, or fanning to reduce body temperature. Focus on areas like the neck, armpits, and groin for faster cooling.
Prompt cooling is the most important step in preventing complications.
