Multiple local civic organizations across the South Shore recently gave their streets, parks, and local ecosystems a spring cleaning.

Groups including the Sayville Civic Association, Save the Great South Bay, the Bayport Civic Association and its Junior Civic Association, and the West Sayville Junior Fire Department recently got to the streets and green spaces around Oakdale, Sayville, and Bayport to clean up garbage accumulated over this past winter.

The Greater Sayville Civic Association collected 10 full bags of garbage during its cleanup along Lakeland Avenue, providing not just a more beautiful roadside, but also saving taxpayers money on town cleanup crews, the board said.

Save the Great South Bay, in partnership with the Bayport Civic and Junior Civic Associations, also collected garbage and debris along Homan’s Creek in Bayport last weekend. While cleaning up Bayport Beach and Homan’s Creek, volunteers collected over 500 pounds of debris, including tires, buckets, and other litter left in and around the water.

The West Sayville Junior Fire Department hosted its biannual cleanup of St. John’s Historic Episcopal Church in Oakdale, collecting mounds of garbage bags filled with sticks, leaves, and other debris around the property.
