The West Islip Lions visited the Sayville Golden Flashes for a gridiron matchup in what turned out to be a down to the wire duel at Timothy J. Henck Field.
Both combatants came into the scuffle with 4-1 conference records in Suffolk County Section XI League II. The Lions pounced first in the seesaw strife when Meghan Farrell waltzed her way into the end zone on a rushing touchdown for an opening score.
The subsequent extra point was good and the Lions led 7-0 with 4:55 to go in the opening quarter. At the end of 12 minutes on the gridiron, it was 7-0 West Islip. In the second quarter, there were two Lions’ interceptions.
One was snagged by Julianna Locrotondo and the other was snatched by Anastasia Farrell. Sayville knotted the contest when they capitalized on fourth down. On fourth and two from the goal line, Aniela Marino ushered into the end zone for six points, then Marino crossed the plane on the ground again to convert the successful extra point.
At halftime the score was tied at seven. In the third quarter, after Sayville made an interception, Marino threw a strike to Jess Person for a first down. Early in the fourth quarter, Sayville drove deep into West Islip territory.
Defensive plays by the Lions for a loss of 2 yards then a loss of 7 kept the game tied at 7 apiece. In the waning minute, West Islip’s go-ahead drive of the game ensued. Farrell tossed a sideline pass to the 1-yard line with 35 seconds remaining, then Farrell plunged to the end zone to reach out and cross the plane with 33 seconds left.
The Lions defense fended off the Golden Flashes offense in the final half minute and West Islip was victorious, 13-7. Up next for West Islip, they will be on the road again to face undefeated Hauppauge on April 24, then will host Comsewogue on Tuesday night.
For Sayville, they’ll be on the road vs. Deer Park on April 23, then again at Shoreham-wading River on Monday.
