Massapequa-based nonprofit We Care Blankets launched a month-long yarn and blanket drive on April 1, aiming to donate yarn and blankets to children battling cancer.
The initiative will collect donated yarn and handmade blankets through May 1, supporting children in hospitals who often endure cold and difficult chemotherapy treatments. The effort builds on decades of work by the organization, which has grown from a small volunteer effort into a widespread community network dedicated to providing handcrafted blankets to young patients.
Founded in 2000 by Tamara Baker after her own medical journey, We Care Blankets was inspired by what she witnessed in a pediatric oncology waiting room; children facing treatment while shivering and afraid. From then on, Baker wanted to ensure that every child in treatment receives a colorful, handmade blanket as a symbol of warmth and care.
Today, her mission continues with volunteers who knit, crochet and assemble blankets, as well as community members who donate supplies. Each blanket is carefully wrapped by volunteers during organized “wrap nights” before being delivered to hospitals, offering not just physical warmth but emotional reassurance to children and their families.
This year’s drive encourages two forms of participation: donating yarn or creating blankets. We Care Blankets emphasize that all materials must be washable acrylic and free of fringe to meet hospital safety standards. Bright colors are preferred to match the organization’s goal of bringing moments of joy to children during difficult circumstances. Blankets must meet a minimum size to ensure they can fully comfort a child.
Last year’s drive collected more than 400,000 yards of yarn and over 200 handmade blankets, demonstrating the impact of collective generosity.
“It is a heartbreaking reality that far too many children battle cancer at such a young age,” said State Sen. Steven Rhoads (R-Wantagh), who has partnered with the drive for the second straight year. “While medical care is essential in their fight, it is equally important that they are surrounded by comfort, compassion, and a sense of warmth during such a difficult and painful time. That’s why I am proud to partner with We Care Blankets, along with Verity Van Lines, and all of the libraries across my Senate District, to make a meaningful difference.
“We Care Blankets is more than just a local charity, it is a community of compassionate individuals who believe deeply in the power of small acts of kindness to uplift others. This initiative goes beyond providing blankets; it offers a tangible reminder to these children that they are not alone in their fight against cancer. Each donation, each stitch, and each act of generosity sends a message of love, strength, and support. I encourage everyone to come together, donate yarn, make blankets, and give these children a gift of love and warmth during their difficult journey.”
