US Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan has stepped down from his role in the Trump administration with immediate effect, according to an announcement by Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Sean Parnell on X.

In a brief statement, officials expressed gratitude for Phelan’s service, saying he had contributed to both the Department and the United States Navy during his tenure. “We are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service… and wish him well in his future endeavors,” the statement read.

Following his departure, Undersecretary Hung Cao will assume the role of Acting Secretary of the Navy.

The announcement comes as the United States continues to navigate heightened tensions amid the ongoing Iran war.

Phelan, who was confirmed by the Senate in March last year, is the latest in a series of high-profile departures from the Pentagon under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. His exit follows last month’s removal of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George and two other generals, moves that triggered internal turmoil and intensified blame games within the Department of Defense.
