The brother of former Sinaloa Cartel drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán has reportedly been captured in a major military operation today (April 22).

Aureliano 'El Guano' Guzmán Loera, the older brother of the notorious El Chapo, was reportedly apprehended by the Mexican army after Black Hawk helicopters and Texan II aircraft were spotted over the mountains of Durango.

Unconfirmed rumours, as Mexico officials are yet to release a statement, were sparked as the major activity saw Culiacán airport closed while the operation took place.

Publications in Mexico have claimed El Guano, who some sources claim is now aged 80, as the leader of the Gente del Guano faction, which is responsible for some of the violence in the Golden Triangle region.

Unlike his high profile brother, El Guano preferred to remain private and discreet with his business from the mountains of the Golden Triangle, which is shared by Sinaloa and Durango.

US authorities were also after El Guano with an offer reportedly in the region of $5-10 million for information that could lead to his capture. He reportedly faces charges in Arizona and New York courts for international drug trafficking conspiracy.

According to the US wanted release from 2021, It read: "Under the umbrella of the Sinaloa Cartel, Aureliano Guzman’s drug trafficking organization (DTO) controls drug smuggling routes from Sinaloa, Mexico, through Sonora, Mexico, and into the United States.
