After testing positive for recreational drug use during the 2026 T20 World Cup, Mohammad Nawaz has come under intense scrutiny, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has launched an official investigation. The positive result came from routine testing carried out during the World Cup earlier this year, according to ESPNcricinfo. The 32-year-old Nawaz played in all seven of Pakistan's games in Sri Lanka, when the team was eliminated at the Super Eight round. He scored 15 runs and took seven wickets in a lacklustre performance.

Nawaz played for the Multan Sultans in the ongoing edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Tuesday, although he has not been playing at his best during the competition.

Psychoactive substances used to induce pleasure, relaxation, or perceptual alterations without medical supervision are known as recreational drugs. Alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and other synthetic drugs are among them.

"The International Cricket Council has informed the Pakistan Cricket Board about this matter, and PCB has begun the due process. The results of this process will be communicated to the ICC today," a board spokesperson said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.

Nawaz, who has represented Pakistan in 98 T20Is, is currently facing uncertainty at a pivotal point in his career. The all-rounder, who is appreciated for his left-arm spin and lower-order batting, has frequently been in Pakistan's white-ball lineup.

His franchise commitments have already been affected by the incident. After obtaining a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the PCB, Nawaz was scheduled to play for Surrey County Cricket Club in the upcoming T20 Blast. However, he will no longer play for the team this summer, though, as the arrangement has apparently fallen through.

Nawaz has continued to play for the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League despite the continuing inquiry. In their recent six-wicket victory over Rawalpindi in Karachi, he bowled three wicketless overs. Nawaz's career in international cricket will be greatly influenced by the investigation's result. He might be suspended or subject to additional disciplinary punishment if found guilty of breaking anti-doping rules.
