The United States has escalated its pressure campaign against Iran into what officials are openly calling afull-spectrum squeeze- targeting the country's maritime trade, financial flows, and oil lifelines simultaneously. The strategy, combining a naval blockade, sanctions, and financial restrictions, points to a coordinated economic chokehold designed to cripple Tehran's ability to sustain itself.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent laid out the administration's approach in stark terms. "As @POTUS has made clear, the United States Navy will continue the blockade of Iranian ports. In a matter of days, Kharg Island storage will be full and the fragile Iranian oil wells will be shut in. Constraining Iran's maritime trade directly targets the regime's primary revenue lifelines. The @USTreasury will continue to apply maximum pressure through Economic Fury to systematically degrade Tehran's ability to generate, move, and repatriate funds. Any person or vessel facilitating these flows—through covert trade and finance—risks exposure to U.S. sanctions. We continue to freeze the funds stolen by the corrupt leadership on behalf of the people of Iran."
An expert explained the cause and effect in simpler terms. X user Mario Nawfal wrote: "Treasury Secretary Bessent reveals the economic endgame: Kharg Island storage will be full 'in a matter of days', forcing Iran to shut in its oil wells. This is the most aggressive economic threat of the entire conflict. Shutting in oil wells isn't like turning off a faucet. Once wells are shut down, restarting them can take months and cost billions. Some wells never fully recover. Bessent is threatening to permanently damage Iran's oil production capacity without dropping a single bomb."
The pressure is not limited to oil. Reports suggest growing economic distress within Iran. Reports are emerging from Iran of the IRGC and security personnel receiving delayed wages or going unpaid. US President Donald Trump confirmed on Truth Social: "Iran is collapsing financially! They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately- Starving for cash! Losing 500 Million Dollars a day. Military and Police complaining that they are not getting paid. SOS!!!"
Washington's squeeze extends beyond Iran's borders. In a significant move, the US has blocked dollar shipments to Iraq, a step aimed at curbing financial flows that could benefit Iran-backed militias. According to officials cited in a Wall Street Journal report, "The Trump administration has suspended US dollar shipments to Iraq and frozen security cooperation programs with its military, escalating the pressure on Baghdad to dismantle powerful Iranian-backed militias." Another report added that "a cargo-plane delivery of nearly $500 million in U.S. banknotes… was blocked recently by Treasury Department officials because of U.S. concerns about the militias".
The financial crackdown is being reinforced through sanctions targeting networks linked to Iran's economy and military. A recent Treasury statement noted: "Today, as part of Economic Fury, Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned an oil smuggling network run by Iranian shipping magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani… OFAC today also sanctioned targets related to a complex Hizballah gold scheme that ultimately benefits Iran's military."
Bessent reiterated the intent behind these measures: "Treasury is moving aggressively with Economic Fury by targeting regime elites like the Shamkhani family that attempt to profit at the expense of the Iranian people. Under @POTUS' leadership, Treasury will continue to cut off Iran's illicit smuggling and terror proxy networks. Financial institutions should be on notice that Treasury will leverage all tools and authorities, including secondary sanctions, against those that continue to support Tehran's terrorist activities."
Iran, for its part, has strongly condemned the US actions. Its foreign ministry has described the naval blockade as unlawful, with spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stating: "First of all, aggression towards maritime shipping and trading, is a dangerous violation. Because if this becomes common, basically maritime freedom will be in danger. Both things America has done are examples of piracy and state terrorism."
The confrontation is unfolding against a fragile diplomatic backdrop. Talks between the United States and Iran remain uncertain, even though the two-week ceasefire has been extended indefinitely by Washington. Trump announced the extension while awaiting what he described as a unified proposal from Tehran, even as signs emerged that negotiations were faltering.
Efforts to organise a second round of talks, potentially in Pakistan, have also run into difficulty. US Vice President JD Vance, expected to lead the American delegation, has remained in Washington, while Pakistan has said it is still awaiting confirmation from Iran. Tehran has indicated hesitation, with Baghaei saying there has been "no final decision" on participation due to "unacceptable actions" by the US - a likely reference to the ongoing blockade.
