Vice President JD Vance’s planned trip to Islamabad for talks with Iran has been called off, as uncertainty deepens around negotiations. A White House official confirmed that Vance, who was expected to travel alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner, will no longer make the trip “in light of President Trump’s Truth Social post confirming the United States is awaiting a unified proposal from the Iranians.” The statement added that “any further updates on in-person meetings will be announced by the White House.”

At the same time, Tasnim News Agency reported that Iran has decided not to attend the planned talks in Pakistan. Citing one of its correspondents, the agency said Tehran pulled out after the US did not back down from what it described as “excessive demands.”

“Iran ultimately announced today that, given this situation, it considers participating in negotiations a waste of time, as the US is obstructing any suitable agreement,” Tasnim reported in translated remarks. Iran has informed Pakistan and mediators that it will not be present for the talks, though the report could not be independently verified.

The developments come after President Donald Trump announced he wouldextend the ceasefirewith Iran, stepping back from earlier threats of military action just hours before the truce was due to expire. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the ceasefire would remain in place until Iran’s “leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal” and negotiations are concluded.

“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured… we have been asked to hold our attack,” Trump wrote, adding that the request came from Asim Munir and Shehbaz Sharif.

Despite the extension, the US military continues its blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran’s decision to skip the talks has further complicated efforts to move negotiations forward.
