Donald Trump has said the United States will extend its ceasefire with Iran to allow time for a potential proposal aimed at ending the conflict. In a post on social media, Trump said the truce would remain in place until Iranian leaders present a "unified proposal" and discussions are concluded.
The ceasefire had been due to expire in the coming hours.
"Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured… we have been asked to hold our attack," he wrote. He added that the request had come from Asim Munir and Shehbaz Sharif.
Trump said he had instructed the US military to maintain its current posture during the extended truce. He said forces would "continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able".
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, with efforts under way to resume negotiations.
