Port Washington Board of Education members Julie Epstein and Rachel Gilliar are running unopposed for re-election in the upcoming school district vote.

Epstein is completing her second term on the board, which she joined during the COVID-19 pandemic period, when much of the district’s work focused on emergency response to public health restrictions. She previously served in school community organizations, including leadership roles in parent-teacher associations, before joining the board.

Since taking office, Epstein has emphasized transitioning the district from pandemic-era operations back to long-term planning and broader academic and operational priorities.

Gilliar, first elected in 2017, is seeking what would be her fourth term. During her tenure, she has participated in board efforts focused on maintaining communication between families and district administration and has previously noted the importance of regularly bringing new perspectives into school governance while continuing institutional experience.

The election is scheduled for May 19, with filing deadlines having closed April 20.

The two incumbents currently hold the only board seats up for election this cycle. If re-elected, both would serve three-year terms beginning July 1, and ending June 30, 2029.

School board members are responsible for adopting the district budget, hiring and evaluating the superintendent, setting long-term educational priorities and working with community stakeholders, according to state school board guidelines. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old and residents of the district for at least one year.

The Port Washington Board of Education consists of seven members, including a president and vice president, who oversee policy direction for the district’s schools.
