(LifeSiteNews) — In what appears to be an escalation in the ongoing feud between the White House and the Vatican, the Trump administration announced that it was canceling an $11 million contract with a Catholic nonprofit group in Florida.

“The U.S. government has abruptly decided to end more than 60 years of relationship with Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Miami,” Archbishop Thomas Wenski said last week. “Why this funding was cut off is a mystery to us, but I can say it’s not because of the recent dustup between the Pope and President Trump.”

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) is part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). For years the program paid Catholic Charities to care for unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors. The move effectively shutters the program, which had been operating in Miami-Dade County.

In an op-ed, Wenski noted that the archdiocese has worked with the ORR since 1960, calling it a “positive” relationship that has left him baffled. He added that the move will force the charity to shut down its facility in the next three months.

Press secretary for the HHS Emily G. Hillard told theMiami Heraldthat the ORR is simply “closing and consolidating unused facilities as the Trump Administration continues efforts to stop illegal entry and the smuggling and trafficking of unaccompanied alien children.” The HHS said that the number of unaccompanied migrant children being taken care of by the agency was “significantly lower,” at 1,900, compared to the more than 22,000 under the Biden administration.

Last week President Trumpissueda scathing critique of Pope Leo, who pushed back on his foreign policy. Trump accused Leo is wanting Iran to have a nuclear bomb and of catering to the “radical left.” Leo replied by stating, “I have no fear with neither the Trump administration, nor speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel.” The back-and-forth has resulted in intense debates among conservative and Traditional Catholics on social media.
