Ashwani Kumar scripted history as he played a key role in helping Mumbai Indians (MI) end a four-match losing run by thrashing the Gujarat Titans by 99 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday (April 20). The 24-year-old broke a six-year-old all-time record of Jasprit Bumrah for the franchise as he took a four-wicket haul.

Ashwani dismissed Gujarat Titans (GT) captain and the current orange cap holder Shubman Gill for a knock of just 14 runs off 13 balls in a game-changing moment. Later, the left-arm pacer dismissed Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, and Rashid Khan to seal a huge win for the five-time champions. Earlier,Tilak Varma'scentury had helped MI post a big total of 199.

Ashwani finished his spell on his maiden appearance of the season with figures of 4/24, which are identical to the numbers he produced on his debut in the league for MI against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium last year.

Ashwani has broken Bumrah's record and become the youngest MI player to take two four-wicket hauls. The Indian cricket legend had held the record since the 2020 season. Before him, the feat belonged to Lasith Malinga.

Youngest To Multiple Four-Wicket Hauls For Mumbai Indians

Meanwhile, Ashwani is the second-youngest uncapped player to get two four-wicket hauls in the IPL's history. The record is held by Umran Malik, who achieved the feat while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) just two months before he made his debut for India.

Umran took a four-wicket haul in SRH's clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Navi Mumbai before taking a five-for against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. The express pacer was 22 years and 156 days old at the time.

Ashwani hails from Punjab and was signed by MI for ₹30 Lakhs at the 2025 IPL Mega Auction. He impressed on his debut and got the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane on the first ball. The left-arm pacer was the 10th player in the league's history to achieve the rare feat.

He also set the record for being the first Indian to take a four-for on IPL debut. His figures remain a record for the best by an Indian player on their debut appearance.

Ashwani's bowling figures remain a record for the best by an Indian on their debut appearance in the league. SRH pacer Sakib Hussain equalled the record with figures of 4/24 against Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 edition. In the match, Praful Hinge also took a four-wicket haul on his IPL debut for the Hyderabad-based side.
