Korea's cumulative electric vehicle (EV) registrations have surpassed the 1 million mark, with more than 100,000 EVs newly registered in the first fourth months of this year, government data showed Tuesday.
A total of 106,939 EVs were sold this year as of Friday, according to the data compiled by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
This represent considerable growth compared to both 2025 and 2024, the latest findings showed.
Last year, the milestone was reached in seven months, while in 2024 it took from January to September to surpass the 100,000-unit mark.
For this year, EVs accounted for more than 20 percent of all new cars sold as of end-March. The figure was sharply higher compared with corresponding tallies of 13 percent and 8.9 percent for 2025 and 2024, respectively.
The ministry attributed the recent popularity of EVs to the Middle Eastern crisis, which has pushed up fuel prices, the release of new EV models by automakers and the government's EV promotion policy.
The government will continue efforts to further expand the distribution of EVs, including EV subsidies, the ministry said.
