The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued aweather alertforecasting thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning and possible hailstorms across parts of Maharashtra between April 20 and 24, 2026. The alert covers key regions including Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada and Konkan, prompting the State Emergency Operations Centre to urge citizens to stay alert and take precautions.
Officials have warned that unstable atmospheric conditions during this period could lead to lightning strikes, crop damage, and localised disruption in several districts. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during adverse weather conditions.
Authorities have released a detailed safety advisory for citizens to reduce risk during thunderstorms and lightning activity.
Residents are advised to immediately seek shelter indoors or inside a safe structure upon hearing thunder or seeing lightning. They should avoid standing under trees, in open fields, near water bodies or close to metal objects.
The advisory also warns against using mobile phones or electronic devices in open areas during lightning activity. If caught outdoors without shelter, individuals are advised to sit low with their feet together rather than lying flat on the ground.
These precautions are aimed at reducing the risk of lightning-related injuries, which tend to rise during pre-monsoon weather disturbances.
Local authorities, including gram panchayats, police and health departments, have been instructed to strengthen public awareness campaigns and ensure rapid communication of weather updates at the village level.
Emergency services such as ambulances and fire brigades have been directed to remain on standby. Schools, community halls and other public buildings are being prepared to function as temporary shelters if required.
Officials have also advised farmers to suspend fieldwork during lightning warnings to avoid risk exposure. Construction activities in vulnerable zones should be temporarily halted, and organisers have been asked to postpone large gatherings such as fairs, religious events and public functions during this weather window.
Authorities stressed that citizens must rely only on official advisories and avoid circulating or acting on rumours. The State Emergency Operations Centre has reiterated that all departments remain on alert, with continuous monitoring of weather conditions to ensure timely response in case of emergencies.
