At least one person has been killed and several others injured in a shooting at a major archaeological site in Mexico, authorities have said. Mexico’s security cabinet said a man opened fire at the Teotihuacán pyramids on Monday, killing a Canadian woman before taking his own life.

An unspecified number of people were wounded in the attack and are receiving medical treatment.

Officials said a firearm, a bladed weapon and live ammunition were recovered at the scene.

Claudia Sheinbaum said authorities from federal, state and local agencies were responding to the incident. "What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply hurts us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the people affected and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian embassy," she said.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Teotihuacán is a major archaeological site and tourist destination in the State of Mexico, about 30 miles northeast from Mexico City. The vast archaeological zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is lined with multiple monuments including two towering pyramids.
