The halls of Mineola’s Hampton Street School were recently transformed into a hub of scientific discovery and creative engineering as students and their families gathered for the school’s annual Family STEAM Night.

The event offered learners a hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering, art and math through a series of interactive challenges and experiments. The evening focused on fostering curiosity and problem-solving skills, as students moved between stations designed to bring classroom concepts to life.

Among the highlights of the night, young engineers designed and tested parachutes to explore air resistance and constructed sail cars to harness the power of wind.

The exploration continued with lessons in buoyancy and chemistry.

Families worked together to sculpt foil boats, testing the limits of how much weight their designs could support. Meanwhile, students experimented with density and chemical reactions by creating DIY lava lamps and custom batches of slime.

The event proudly emphasizes the importance of the “trial and error” process.

Whether a project succeeded on the first try or required a redesign, the focus remained on the joy of discovery and the thrill of learning something new together.

Mineola Public Schools extends its gratitude to the faculty, staff and volunteers whose dedication made this evening of exploration possible.
