A Hempstead man pleaded guilty on Monday, April 20, to aggravated vehicular assault and other charges for a drunken wrong-way crash on the Long Island Expressway in 2025 that seriously injured another driver, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced.
Jorge Arias Reyes pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault, assault, and aggravated driving while intoxicated, the DA said. He is due back in court on June 12 and is expected to be sentenced to up to five to nine years in prison.
On May 18, 2025, Reyes was driving a 2009 Honda Odyssey westbound in the eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 37 in Roslyn, Donnelly said. He drove on the wrong side of the road for several miles and sideswiped another vehicle before he eventually collided head-on with a 2014 Toyota Prius, Donnelly said.
The 51-year-old driver of the Prius was hospitalized after suffering a fractured tibia and a dislocated hip, the DA said.
Reyes was arrested and blood taken from him at the hospital showed his blood alcohol content was .26%, more than three times the legal limit for alcohol, Donnelly said.
