Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Rs 10 ‘jhalmuri’ snack break in Jhargram has become a major talking point on social media. The moment also pushed Google search interest for the word “jhalmuri” to its highest level in the past 22 years, from 2004 to now. Moreover, a video of PM Modi eating and savouring the iconic street snack, uploaded on his official Instagram account, crossed over 90 million views within 24 hours and has now surpassed 100 million views.
On Sunday, in the middle of intense campaigning for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, PM Modi briefly stepped away from his rallies for an unplanned roadside interaction in Jhargram. During the stop, he connected with locals at a street stall, smiling and chatting, offering a rare candid moment beyond the usual campaign trail. Photos and videos from the moment were shared across online platforms through PM Modi’s official social media handles.
In a video from the moment, PM Modi is seen walking up to a street vendor selling jhalmuri and saying, “Bhaiya, humein apna jhalmuri khilao.” (“Brother, please let me have some of your jhalmuri.”). He then goes on to ask, “Kitne ka hota hai aapka jhalmuri?” (“How much does your jhalmuri cost?”). When he attempts to pay, the vendor initially declines, but PM Modi insist, resulting in a light-hearted interaction between the two.
This particular video on Instagram has crossed over 100 million views, with more than 6 million likes and over 97,000 comments. On YouTube, the clip garnered around 7 lakh views within 24 hours. The same video on X (formerly Twitter) has crossed 13 million views, while on Facebook it has garnered over 90 million views. The numbers are expected to rise further as the moment continues to gain traction during the election season.
The developments come just ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, which will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is aiming for a fourth straight term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party, which secured 77 seats in the last election, is stepping up its push to form the government in the state.
