Donald Trumpon Monday said it is 'highly unlikely' that he would extend the ceasefire with Iran if a deal is not reached, Bloomberg reported. The two-week-long Iran ceasefire, which he announced on April 7, will expire on Wednesday, April 23. The development has come ahead of the proposed round two of the US-Iran talks in Islamabad, that is reportedly scheduled to take place tomorrow. While Trump has confirmed that a US delegation led by Vice PresidentJD Vanceis visiting Pakistan, Iran has not confirmed its participation in the next round of negotiations, citing trust issues against Washington.
Speaking to Bloomberg in a telephonic interview, the US President said that he is not in a rush to make a deal with Iran as they have all the time in the world. Trump noted that the ceasefire will expire on Wednesday, Washington time.
The Associated Press quoted Trump's New York Post interview that Vice President JD Vance is headed to Pakistan for negotiations on the Iran War, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who is Trump’s son-in-law.
“They’re heading over now,” Trump said. “They’ll be there tonight.”
But it’s not quite clear if Trump was speaking more broadly or if the claims about Vance are accurate. Administration officials have in response to questions declined to confirm if Vance is, in fact, mid-air on the way to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
The US and Iran held rare direct talks in Pakistan on April 11 and 12 in Islamabad aimed at ending their conflict, but the talks concluded without any agreement. The US President said that the talks failed as Iran was not ready to give up on its nuclear program while Tehran flagged trust issues against Washington.
Trump's announcement of the fresh round of talks raised hopes of extending a two-week ceasefire that expires by Wednesday, but so far, Iran has not confirmed its participation, even as the US President has said that his team is visiting Islamabad.
