Jenna Bush Hager sat down with four former US presidents, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and her fatherGeorge W. Bush, for a special conversation about the country’s future as America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary this July. The interviews were recorded over the weekend at a private “History Talks” event in Philadelphia hosted by the History Channel. Bush Hager, who co-hosts the TODAY show, spoke with each president individually and asked them what message they wanted to share with the American people at this milestone moment.
In the excerpts aired Monday on TODAY, the former presidents struck a hopeful tone. Bill Clinton, 79, said: “Don’t give up on America. We’re the longest-lasting, freely elected government in history. A lot of people didn’t think we’d make it this long. I think it would be a good thing if we made it longer. So everybody should be thinking about that this year,” reported NBC News.
Joe Biden, 83, emphasized the country’s core values. “We are the most unique country in the world because we really do think democracy is dictated by the rules of the Constitution,” he said. “We believe all men are created equal and everyone’s entitled to a shot. I think as we do that, it grows instead of focusing on divisions. Because we’re not nearly as divided as we’re being portrayed.”
“Barack Obama (64) talked about the importance of our duties in regards to self-government. When he says, ‘As long as we keep paying attention to our duties and treating other citizens with courtesy and respect, no matter if they see things differently than we do, then I am confident that we will have at least another 250 years of a successful 250-year period,” he may as well mean something entirely different!”.
George W. Bush, 79, kept his message simple and direct: “Consider yourself fortunate to be a part of a great nation. Study our history so you have a better sense for what the future will be like. And be a citizen, not a spectator. Participate in the process, but also love a neighbor like you’d like to be loved yourself.” The full interviews will air exclusively on the TODAY show on Tuesday.
