On April 19, 2026, the Char Dham Yatra officially begun, marking the start to one of the country's most significant annual pilgrimages. This is when the sacred gates of Yamunotri and Gangotri were swung open on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. This also marked the end of the 6-month winter closure of the gates that had kept the shrines sealed since the last season.

This year, particularly, the yatra is set to draw pilgrims from all over the country and beyond who have been seeking spiritual fulfilment across the four sacred shrines that are beautifully nestles in Uttarakhand’s high-altitude terrain. For Char Dham Yatra 2026, the turnout is supposedly going to be a large one, as the authorities get set to welcome them with stricter management and improved infrastructure systems set in place to handle this surge.

The portals of the Gangotri temple opened at 12.15 PM on April 19th and were followed by the opening of the Yamunotri gates at 12:35 PM. All this happened amid the chanting of Vedic spiritual music and hymns. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was present at the Gangotri ceremony, offering prayers for the nation's well-being. The first prayers at both temples in Uttarkashi district were offered in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kedarnath follows on April 22, and Badrinath on April 23, completing the quartet of shrines that have drawn pilgrims for over twelve centuries.

The journey begins at Yamunotri, source of the Yamuna river, and winds through Gangotri, where the Ganga is said to have descended from the heavens, to the rugged grandeur of Kedarnath, nestled at 3,583 metres above sea level. It concludes at Badrinath, the abode of Lord Vishnu, standing silent and majestic against the Neelkanth peak.

This season, the Uttarakhand government has put extensive arrangements in place, medical facilities along the route, shuttle services through vulnerable stretches, and a strong push for a plastic-free pilgrimage. One of the most important updates for 2026 is mandatory registration. Pilgrims must complete the process online or through designated channels before beginning their journey. A QR-based pass system is being used to monitor movement and control overcrowding, especially in high-risk zones.

Char Dham Yatra is known to attract a massive footfall every year and 2026 is expected to be bigger than ever before. Last year, Char Dham Yatra recorded over 51 lakh pilgrims and authroities have already been anticipating an even higher turnout this season where some estimates are expecting it to reach upto 60 lakh devotees who will be undertaking this journey. Early trends had also been refecting strong demand this year with lakhs of pilgrims reigistering within hours of the portal opening. If the tight management and better infrastructure facilities function smoothly, 2026 might see one of the highest pilgrim turnouts yet, reinforcing the yatra’s growing scale and significance.
