ChatGPT was trying super hard to make a comeback this year, and just when things started looking a little in favour of OpenAI's product, a new controversy came knocking doors that is actually causing some financial trouble for the company. So what happened is that OpenAI President Greg Brockman and his wife donated $12.5 million to a super PAC supporting Donald Trump. Simultaneously, activists highlighted that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses a resume screening tool backed by ChatGPT 4. And this gave birth to the QuitGPT movement under which thousands of users have cancelled their paid subscriptions.
The campaign picked up pace on Instagram and Reddit, where the users started posting the screen grabs of their cancelled subscriptions and posts firing shots at the recent update and the tone of ChatGPT. A few users also said that the replies now are long and overly polite.
According to the organisers of the QuitGPT movement, more than 17,000 people have already signed up on their website and pledged to cancel their ChatGPT subscription and spread the word as well. A lot of users have also raised concerns about the growing connection between the Trump administration and tech giants.

As for the campaign, a lot of young activists are taking part in the same. The list includes climate organisers, labour advocates, and even tech workers. The inspiration for the movement came from a video of marketing professor Scott Galloway. He said that cancelling subscriptions could send a message to the firms that supporting government policies that are not welcomed by the masses will result in a financial dent.
As of now, OpenAI has not made any comment on the QuitGPT movement. And figuring out the impact of the same will be possible only when OpenAI or Sam Altman addresses the issue.
