An app-based cab drivers' union has announced an indefinite strike starting Monday (April 20) at Azad Maidan, Mumbai. The union members will be on a hunger strike over their long-standing grievances. The strike, called 'Fast Unto Death', has been planned to pressure the government for stricter enforcement against illegal bike taxi operations and for adherence to government-approved fare structures on aggregator platforms.
Thousands of Ola and Uber cab drivers have been participating in this strike across Maharashtra. According to reports, the strike has been led by major driver unions with an aim to pressure the state government to impose a ban on app-based bike taxi services.
According to a Times of India report, the drivers' union is protesting for immediate action against unauthorised bike taxi services operating in violation of existing regulations.
The union is further demanding the implementation of government-approved fares on aggregator platforms.
The drivers alleged that despite repeated orders from the transport department, companies including Ola, Uber, and Rapido allegedly continue to violate rules with impunity. The aggregator cab firms have denied these claims, TOI reported.
Moreover, protests are not just limited to Mumbai and will also be held at the District Collector's Office in Pune and Samvidhan Chowk in Nagpur. The protesters have stressed that they will continue the hunger strike until their demands are met. The protesters will continue the strike until they are provided with a written assurance regarding a permanent ban or strict regulation of these services.
Union leader Keshav Kshirsagar alleged authorities have failed to act despite repeated protests, calling the situation “alarming” and claiming the government machinery appears powerless before multinational aggregators, according to a TOI report.
