A freeze warning is in effect for Suffolk County from midnight Monday night to 9 a.m. Tuesday, with subfreezing temperatures as low as 27 degrees expected, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

The warning covers northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast Suffolk, including the Riverhead area. The weather service said frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and that tender outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

Forecasters said a colder air mass is settling in and that the coldest temperatures of the stretch are expected Monday night as skies clear and winds become light, allowing temperatures to drop efficiently.

In Riverhead, the National Weather Service forecast calls for a low around 27 Monday night, with wind chill values as low as 20 and a northwest wind around 8 mph. Tuesday is expected to be sunny with a high near 52, with frost possible early.

Residents are urged to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
