There’s a real simple test to see if someone claiming to support ‘justice’ is telling the truth. Is there meaningful alignment between the problems they want to solve and the solutions they expect us to adopt?
The problem begins right at the beginning, in how the story is framed. The headlines and the story do more than answer the all-important ‘Five-W’s and How’ of classic reporting. It reaches beyond that to the way you are supposed to feel about a tragic story from this weekend.
The headlines COULD have told us that a “Man Murdered Eight Children Before Police Shoot Him Dead”. That’s an honest headline. It invites further questions about where those children were, how old they were. How did a dangerous man find himself in the presence of so many victims. Where there no adults around to intervene?
The headline might have taken us a little further. Father Murders 8 Kids Before Cops Stop Him Cold. Now we’re seeing that this was a murder-suicide situation. This was targeted and intentional, not a random malicious attacker. We have answered the question about why no other adult intervened (where was the mom?) But we still don’t know whether any may have gotten away, or if not, what kept them from fleeing to some kind of a safe hiding spot.
A quick summary of the actual story (as toldhere) goes something like this:
Shreveport Police are describing as ‘domestic violence’, a situation in which 8 children ages 3-11 were killed. The suspect, Shamar Elkins shot and seriously injured two women (thought to be his wife and his girlfriend). Elkins, a known felon, was father of seven of the eight children, and cousin to the other child.
Elkins, the lone suspect went first to one address, shot the woman outside at around 6am. Next, went to the other address nearby, where he shot a woman and all the kids inside. Many of them were asleep in their beds when they were shot in the head. At least one child fled to the roof, where his body was later located.
The wife, reportedly mother of 7 of the children, had been shot in the face.
The suspect had priors, including a 2019 arrest and conviction for unlawful use of a firearm.
Here’s a chilling family photo.
