Tokyo:A high-intensity earthquake struck off the northern Japanese coast on Monday (April 20). The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami alert in the region. On the Richter Scale, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the region, reported The Associated Press. Tremors were felt off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at around 4:53 p.m. (0753 GMT), at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface, the agency said.
The epicentre of the earthquake is located in the Pacific Ocean. So far, there are no reports of any injuries or collateral damage due to the quake. Tremors were also felt in Japan's capita, Tokyo.
As per the Japan Meteorological Agency tsunami waves of up to 3 metres is expected to reach large coastal areas in northern Japan, reported Reuters. The country's weather agency has issued an evacuation warning to locals in the wake tsunami alert.
"Evacuate immediately from coastal regions and riverside areas to a safer place such as high ground or an evacuation building," Japan's weather agency said, as quoted by ABC News.
"Tsunami waves are expected to hit repeatedly. Do not leave safe ground until the warning is lifted," it added.
