WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that a U.S. destroyer ship opened fire and then took control of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman that tried to evade a U.S. naval blockade.

Trump posted on Truth Social that after the Iranian vessel ignored warnings to stop, the U.S. guided missile destroyer "stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom."

"Right now, U.S. Marines have custody of the vessel," the U.S. president added.
